I was 14 when my father gave me my first camera: his old school, retro Pentax K1000.  My dad was a surveyor, which brings a unique perspective to photography because both need a real grasp of the physics: optics, perspective, precision, accuracy, field of view.  He taught me everything I needed to plant the seed of a lifelong obsession.  In the footsteps of the father, I went on to study surveying.  I found myself formalising knowledge in both surveying and as a byproduct, photography.  After all, that surveying theodolite is just a highly precise telescope and shares all the same properties of the SLR. Fast forward a couple of decades and my wife, who had been obsessed with wanting to travel overseas for her whole life, finally talked me into an overseas holiday to Switzerland for six weeks.  The travel bug thing had never really made sense to me: I valued having tangible things over experiences.  But she was passionate about wanting to go, so off we went with two little kids in toe. That travel bug thing?  It got me.  In fact, sometimes I think I've surpassed Nic in my endless and insatiable desire to go to more and more places. My children, who are now teenagers, have been to many countries, but probably their most significant memory was standing around waiting while Dad took photos.  The thing that probably did it was the experience, places, food, culture, of course, but what I remember most was the endless joy of capturing amazing places on film.  Ansel Adams is quoted as saying, 'Twelve significant photos in any one year is a good crop.'  I'm still trying to achieve this elusive ambition, maybe it will be this year. When we were in Paris, we did a home exchange with a couple who lived in the most drop-dead gorgeous, typically Parisienne apartment.  It was something out of Les Intouchables.  In the evenings, Nic & I would buy some cheap, local French wine, sit in that gorgeous living room and process photos to relive the day.  It was all so captivating.  I never had a day at work when I felt like this about what I had achieved.  I never before felt that burning desire to get back out there and see what more I could capture. So, now, after decades of travelling and capturing, I'm in a unique position to share my collection with creatives who are searching for something special for the influence in the world they're trying to make.
